I don’t know when kneeling in church started, but I think not in Bible times. The Bible talks about prostrate before the Lord, and bowing before Him (“every knee shall bow…”). Lots of returns on “kneel” in a concordance search…
From the Greek: στήκετε (stēkete)
Verb – Present Indicative Active – 2nd Person Plural
Strong’s Greek 4739: To stand fast, stand firm, persevere. From the perfect tense of histemi; to be stationary, i.e. to persevere.

  Thanks Kathy. Maybe it came from every knee shall now and they just went it.
  
  I pray when standing, sitting and if a heavy thing I will fall to my knees.
