How many of you have seen the movie Se7en with Brad Pitt & Morgan Freeman? You know the one with the famous phrase of “What’s in the box?”
If not, it is a detective movie/cop thriller where the criminal is killing people based off of the seven deadly sins. Those seven being: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, pride, envy and wrath.
Now, I enjoyed this movie and I can see where these sins are wrong. They all stem from selfishness. The lust of I want. The gluttony of over indulging in foods. The greed of I want more. The slothfulness of I want it done for me. The pride of look what I did. The envy of another’s possesions. And the wrath of you made me mad or hurt my feelings and I will get you back.
See it all has to do with self.
But what are the seven deadly sins in scripture? Let’s take a look…
These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
Proverbs 6:16-19 KJV
Now abomination is as close to hate as God can get. He despises these 7 things.
Let’s break them down…
A proud look can easily be looking down your nose at someone…anyone. It doesn’t matter their station in life. Of you feel that you are better than another…you are guilty.
A lying tongue is simply a person who lies. They would rather tell a lie to stay out of trouble than tell the truth and suffer the consequences. Do you know how hard it is to keep a lie going? It’s not just one lie! You have to keep lying to cover the first one. Ok…yeah…we are all guilty of this one.
Hands that shed innocent blood is not a tough one to figure out but let me share a few thoughts on the topic…
- Abortion ~ is most definitely shedding of innocent blood.
- Killing of a bystander. So many children and adults alike have been killed by drive-by shootings where bullets are just sprayed across the street not really aimed at their “target”.
- Suicide bombers would be another example. Thousands have died due to this act alone to get just one maybe two targeted people.
- Then we have recently had these idiots during the riots pulling people from buildings and beating them to death for no other reason than their feelings got hurt.
- Here’s one that most people would not put in with this but I do…because words can kill. Not physically mind you, though they have led to suicide to the receiver of said words😥 (But pretty much all of us are guilty of using words to kill another person’s spirit.)
A heart that devises wicked imaginations. This one is close to my heart because for me it is associated with sex. This could be a pedophile who is thinking wicked thoughts of what he/she would do to said child. Anyone who is a part of sex trafficking is very much a guilty party to this as well as the rapist!!
Feet that are swift to run into mischief. These are like the idiots who took part in the riots in my opinion. Swift in following the crowd and up to no good! But it could also be your best friend who always jumps at the chance to go party when they know what’s in store when the get there.
A false witness that speaks lies. A lie is a lie regardless if you are covering your own skin or just downright lying about a person. Once the words I heard comes out of your mouth before you finish a sentence…guilty. We call it gossip to make it sound “good” but it’s still bearing false witness.
And one who does discord among brethren. This one is, to me, the only one referencing the Church as it says brethren. And there is a lot of that going around and has been for centuries! Hence the reason for all these denominations we have. Just because you do not see eye to eye with a brother and sister in Christ, regardless if you are sitting side by side in the pew or thousands of miles away from one another on the internet, does not mean start a fight.
Why not try to realize that the Holy Spirit gave them that word for that verse and gave you a different word because you are walking different paths and have different backgrounds.
Sort of like a Christian saying I can’t be a Christian because I like rock music with Christ like lyrics or that I drink a beer occasionally.
Ridiculous! And churches have split for lesser issues than that😮
Yet ALL of these sins are forgivable through the shed blood of Jesus Christ!! Thank you Lord!
And if we take up the motto of Let’s love like Jesus or even love thy neighbor as thyself then we could avoid all these!
I for one can say I am guilty of all, from the lying to the wicked imaginations (porn usage will do that), yet forgiven by the grace of God
If you have some unconfessed sin in your life please take a moment to take it the Lord and seek forgiveness! And if you start to cry while praying let it OUT. That’s part of the healing process😊
Excellent and thoughtful post, Stu. I especially liked how you used analogies from today’s world to show the sin that God hates.

Amen, Stu. Oh, amen! We are all so guilty! And God Almighty is so gracious! Let us come boldly before His throne and confess our sins; He is gracious to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (Heb 4.16 and 1 John 1.9).
THEN we can live in peace.

Great post! In agreement that these are all about self and the flesh. I am thankful that GOD made a way for us to be forgiven for our sins. The closer I walk with JESUS the more convicted I am of my sins……daily. Thank you for this reminder and love and I am embracing the scripture!

Thank you Maxine. I love the fact that the closer we walk with Jesus the more He reveals to us as sin and softly convicts us.

Thank you for this post. It’s a great reminder really.
Yes, most people have done most all these things, in a lesser scale, but one thing, I think happens with most peoples thinking is that one sin is greater than another. It’s not true. It all breaks God’s heart the same. A little white lie….or murder…it’s all the same to God.
I like that you included how words can kill ones spirt. Some times, we don’t know the power our tongue has. Weather we use it on ourselves or others.

Oh, I am so glad you like this one! You are so right. Sin IS sin regardless of the action! And yes that tongue has way more power than most realize!
