While leading our 12 Step Study last night for Richland Celebrate Recovery several things finally made sense as they came to me while reading the opening scriptures.
The first one is the power that resides in us.
We have a major power source that we never truly tap into. And the reason is we are scared to. And, honestly, the main thing behind our fear is in the fact that have no idea what type of change or effect that power will have on us.
Think about it. If you had told me fours years ago..”Stuart, get prepared. God is fixing to change you. He is fixing to radically change everything. You will lose your wife to get your attention. Then He will start working on your heart and your addictions. He will give you new friends. He will ask you to speak out against the one thing you do not have the power on your own to overcome. You will give your testimony on that addiction and be an accountability partner for many. It will hurt. It will down right suck, but God will see you through your weakness by His power. Just trust Him.” I would have laughed in your face and called you a few names like stupid or an idiot.
But had you said that, you would have been telling me the truth. This all happened or rather is happening now. I have lost my wife. I have given my testimony on a lifetime addiction to pornography several times now and still do as the Lord reveals new things that have happened to me. There was a lot of things that I had suppressed into a very dark unremembering part of my mind.
But as Philippians 4:13 states I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
The key word in that verse is through. We are the conduit in which Christ’s strength flows if we allow ourselves to be.
He does give us the strength to overcome temptation IF we ask. He does give us strength to stand up in front of people we do not know and talk about our secret life we have struggled with IF we ask. Trust me, I did. Because I know in my own strength I would not have made it up the steps..I would have chickened out. But Christ gave me strength to get up those steps, speak and show what His strength, His power, has done in my life.
The other thing was change. Be ready for it because it is going to happen. But only in God’s timing. For there are lessons to be learned along the way.
In Ephesians 4:23 it says “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.” Renewal is change. It is a natural course for those who earnestly seek God. You can not seek God and not change.
I sought God and He rewarded me with freedom.
But without faith it is impossible to please Him; for he that comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is the rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.
If you want freedom from your addiction diligently seek God and tap into the power source available. You will see change and you will have the power to overcome through Jesus.
