What Would You Do If Today Was Your Last?

What if today was your last day here on earth and you knew it?

I know a bad thought, right. But the truth is…each one of us will die one day and we have no true idea when.

You could be walking in the mall and have a heartache like my best friend’s brother did. You could have an aneurysm like my PawPaw. You could die in a car wreck like many of my friends children have. You could be shot in the line of duty. And the list goes on…

But what would happen if you knew that today at midnight God would call you home? After the initial I’m not ready God statement…what would you do? How would you interact with others?

Would you love your spouse differently?

Would you treat others the same as you did yesterday?

Would you hurry to make amends to those you have hurt or to those that have hurt you?

Would you love your children differently?

Would you spend the whole day with loved ones sharing your time with them?

Would you thank God for the life He has given?

Would you make love to your spouse with all the passion you had in you?

Some valid questions, right? The thing about life on this Earth is that one day that life will end. We are not guaranteed a tomorrow or even an hour…

So treat everyone as if today was your last day with them!

Lord, today you may take me home. My prayer for today is that I be the person you want me to be TODAY. Allow me to love as you love TODAY. Allow me to treat everyone with that love TODAY, as I may not have that opportunity tomorrow. Allow me to make amends, Father, TODAY for those who have harmed me or who I have harmed. Allow me to do not anything that would shame you TODAY, for I do not want to do anything TODAY that I would not want you to be a part of. Lord, let your light shine through me TODAY that someone will see you living in me. And Lord, let me praise you for TODAY.

Amen

  1. I’m listening to the song called like this, by Nickelback. The lyric strike me so I decided I should share it with you :

    […] leave your fears behind

And try to take the path less traveled by

That first step you take is the longest stride

If today was your last day

    And tomorrow was too late

Could you say goodbye to yesterday?

Would you live each moment like your last?

Leave old pictures in the past

    Donate every dime you have?

If today was your last day

Against the grain should be a way of life

What’s worth the prize is always worth the fight

Every second counts ’cause there’s no second try

So live like you’ll never live it twice

Don’t take the free ride in your own life

  2. If I knew today was my last day, I probably would not do too much differently other than making sure I said goodbye to those who I love. Everyday my intention is to live to the fullest even if it is a quiet day that seemingly nothing out of the ordinary is happening. Very thought-provoking post by the way. Truly amazing and I thank you!

  3. I fear I might be at once be relieved, thinking not of the landing place for my soul; but the departure from misery, the closure of sorrows unknown. How sad to be more concerned about the absence of pain than the state of my soul’s final resting place. And quite shocking it must seem I’m sure to others to be so consumed with self than my own salvation …

      1. Thank you brother, however I know enough Word to understand fully that the “wages of sin is death” and that “no sin shall enter in” .. hence it is with clarity of this and other scriptures that I say I doubt salvation for myself — at least at this moment. Even still, it feels nice, all warm and fuzzy to be given reassurances, if nothing else the promise of prayer, which is above all to me of great importance….
